Raymond McGuire (1992) explained that the best parameters to characterise the colour of a biological "object" are the Chroma and the Hue Angle, rather than raw L*, a*, b* values. Indeed Chroma represents the saturation of the colour, and to some extent the intensity or the amount of pigments, and the Hue Angle refers to the colour that we can all conceptualise easily on a chromatic circle. Finally, L* represents the lightness: the greater the value the paler the colour; the lower the value, the darker the colour.
